Madrone Groves Series

This series is inspired by the “Pacific Madrone” species of trees (arbutus menziesii) found in coastal forests of the Pacific Northwest Region of North America.  Artist, Carole Hayne lives in a grove of madrone trees, and enjoys observing the dynamic changes of the trees through the seasons.

Each piece is formed from a slab of clay creating an organic shaped vase or bowl, and features a unique pattern of tree trunks made by caving out the negative spaces between them.  The ground is golden tan glaze, tree trunks are a “lobster” stained glaze and the leaves a saturated copper glaze.  The surface of the piece is blended together with a light dusting of white glaze.

Winter Root Series

This series is inspired by the stark visual beauty of winter, as well as how life survives under extreme conditions. The pieces are hand built by Carole Hayne from white stoneware clay that is rolled thin and then imprinted using a carved wooden roller that creates a raised overall pattern in the clay.  After the first firing in the kiln, the boxes are covered with a special iron oxide stain, called an “engobe”.  Most of the stain is then washed off leaving the engobe in the low points of the piece to accentuate the imprinted patterns with a sepia-like tone.  The pieces are then fired again to cure and set the stain.

Modern Geometric Series

This series is inspired by Carole Hayne’s lifelong interest in math and science, and her related love of modern architecture and design.  Many of the vases in this series are soft cubes that are made to be displayed on their vertices.   Other pieces involve smooth curved shapes.  All pieces are hand built by Carole and are glazed with a variety of vibrant colors.

Spring Reeds Series

This series is inspired by the first verdant growth of Spring. All pieces are hand built by Carole Hayne, using a clay that is a mixture of porcelain and stoneware creating pieces that are strong, but with a refined appearance.  They are decorated using a technique called “sprigging,” in which a three-dimensional design is formed in clay and then attached to the body of the piece.  The design elements include leaves, shoots, and reeds, and other tender growths of Spring.  The translucent green glaze used on these pieces accentuates the three-dimensional surface design.    The finish is delicately matte with a satiny feel.
